Quilted Redwood Flute — Key of F, 432 Hz
A soft, meditative flute with a beautiful, almost otherworldly grain.
Redwood is a softer wood than Aromatic Cedar, and it gives this flute a distinctly gentle voice. The sound is soft and meditative, with a more intimate projection than some of my harder-wood flutes. Depending on how it is played, it can have a slightly nasal or reed-like quality that gives it its own character.
The quilted grain of this particular piece of Redwood is especially beautiful. It almost looks as though you're looking through the wood while it is underwater. I've kept the design simple, allowing the wood itself to be the focus, with Turquoise inlay as the primary decorative element. There are no additional embellishments on the mouthpiece or footcap.
Redwood is an interesting wood to work with. Its softer nature and the differences in density between the growth rings mean that it doesn't take the same ultra-smooth finish that harder woods can, especially around the fipple and splitting edge. I enjoy working with that natural character rather than trying to make the wood behave like something it isn't.
Tuned to F at 432 Hz, this is a high-quality musical instrument with a quiet, introspective voice. It is particularly well suited to meditation, reflection, or simply sitting down with the flute and seeing what comes through.
Take a breath, play a note, listen, and let the sound unfold.
