Reclaimed Poplar Flute — F#, 432 Hz

A warm, responsive flute made from reclaimed Poplar, with an easy feel for smaller hands.

The Poplar used to make this flute has an interesting history. I salvaged the wood from the frame of an old futon chaise lounge that was headed for the dump. I liked the character of the wood and decided it deserved another life—as a musical instrument rather than furniture headed for the landfill.

This particular piece of Poplar is light in color, with a fine, understated grain. It's not a flashy piece of wood, and that's part of what I like about it. The simple beauty of the Poplar lets the craftsmanship and the natural character of the wood speak for themselves.

I've paired the Poplar with Black Walnut for the mouthpiece and footcap, giving the flute a darker contrast at each end. The block is made from Black Locust and Black Walnut, with a small Turquoise accent adding a touch of color.

Musically, this flute has a warm, responsive voice. It speaks easily and doesn't require a lot of effort to get it going, making it a particularly comfortable flute for someone with smaller hands. The finger spacing is easy to manage, so this is a flute that feels approachable from the moment you pick it up.

Tuned to F# at 432 Hz, it has a warm and inviting character that makes it a lovely instrument for personal playing, quiet exploration, or simply sitting down with your breath and seeing what develops.

A note about the tuning: I design these flutes so the block can be slid slightly back from the fipple, raising the pitch so the flute can be played at 440 Hz as well. Although this flute is built and voiced around 432 Hz, you have the flexibility to play at either tuning depending on what you're playing with.
