A warm, approachable flute with a sweet spot between size, tone, and playability.
The key of F is one of my favorite places to land when I'm looking for a flute that has a little more warmth and depth without becoming too large or difficult to handle.
This flute is made from Western Red Cedar, a wonderful wood for beginning players because it responds easily with very little breath pressure. The key of F makes it slightly larger than my G flutes, but it is still a comfortable size for most players.
To me, F sits in a kind of sweet spot. You get a lower, warmer tonality than you find in a G flute, while still retaining the accessibility that makes the Native American-style flute such a wonderful instrument to begin with.
You don't need to know how to read music. You don't need years of musical experience. Take a breath, cover a few holes, and you can begin making music almost immediately. From there, you can explore melody, rhythm, breath, and your own musical voice at whatever pace feels natural.
There is also a little piece of my own history in these flutes. I made these Western Red Cedar flutes while I was living on Bear Creek, just north of Carson, Washington. During one particularly snowy stretch, I was snowed in for several days and spent that time in the shop making six flutes. These instruments came out of that period of my life, and I like knowing that a little piece of that time is carried forward in them.
The Cedar used for these flutes is especially blonde, with a light, warm color that gives them a clean and understated beauty. I didn't need to do much to the wood—the natural color and grain do most of the work.
Tuned to F at 432 Hz, this is a beautiful choice for someone looking for a flute that is easy to approach but has a little more depth and warmth than a smaller G flute.
