Ponderosa Pine Flute — Key of E Minor, 432 Hz
A strong, grounded flute made from reclaimed Ponderosa Pine and the history of an old barn.
This flute was made from reclaimed Ponderosa Pine barnwood from one of the oldest properties in Midway, Utah. I kept the body simple and let the character of the reclaimed wood speak for itself, while adding a Canarywood and Purple Heart block for contrast and detail.
The old nail holes in the board became part of the design. I filled them with Turquoise inlay, highlighting the places where the wood's previous life is still visible. The oxidation of the reclaimed Pine has also created subtle charcoal-colored tones, particularly around those old nail holes. On this flute, those markings are especially pronounced and become part of its visual story.
Tuned to E at 432 Hz, this flute has a bolder quality than its C# sibling from the same board. The E note is traditionally associated with the solar plexus chakra and personal power, which feels fitting for an instrument with such a strong, grounded character.
This flute doesn't feel quite as melancholy or mystical to me. It feels strong, grounded, and gently powerful.
It is a beautiful example of how reclaimed wood can carry something of its history forward into a new life as a musical instrument.

A note about the tuning: This newer design allows you to slide the block slightly back from the fipple, raising the pitch so the flute can be played at 440 Hz as well. Although this flute is built and voiced around 432 Hz, you have the flexibility to play at either tuning depending on what you're playing with.
